Candaba leads food terminal project

    CLARK FREEPORT – Giant malls in Pampanga, including Robinson’s and SM City, will benefit from the food terminal here set to open before the Holiday season, said Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo last week.

    Pelayo said his town is leading the establishment of a food terminal at the “idle lot” of the Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC).

    He added that about five hectares and situated beside the warehouse in front of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) building where Candaba farmers regularly sell their produce during Fridays.

    “Fresh and cheaper vegetables from areas as far as Baguio will be readily available for retailers and big investors,” said Pelayo, who was monitoring the initial phases of the construction.  

    “We are doing this to help the government with its food security program,” he stressed. He thanked CIAC President and CEO Victor Jose Luciano for his support to the project.

    Pelayo said he and other local officials should be “pro-active” to generate economic activities and employment here and nearby areas in Central Luzon. 

    He said farmers in the province will also benefit from the food terminal project. He added that trucks coming from other areas will definitely go back to their home province loaded with local products of Pampanga and a section in the food terminal will cater to retailers. “Cooked vegetables will also be available.”

    Pelayo said his town and other government agencies will hold a series of seminars to show that various vegetables can grow in areas here and Pampanga affected by lahar sand.
