OLONGAPO CITY — City officials headed by Mayor Rolen Paulino joined SM Supermalls executives during the ceremonial unveiling of marker in one of the important landmark parks in the city, the “Marikit Park” along Rizal Avenue recently.
Built in 1976 by combined efforts of the Association of Retired Federal Employees and then Mayor Geronimo Lipumano, the “Marikit Park” which is one of the most historic and consequential parks in Olongapo City serves as a venue for the LGU’s numerous sports, arts, and cultural programs.
Paulino, together with Vice Mayor Rodel Cerezo and members of the Sangguniang Panglungsod, welcomed SM Supermalls Vice President for Operations Engr. Bien C. Mateo, Regional Operations Manager for North Luzon 2 Engr. Rheybie Nipas and Assistant Mall Manager of SM Olongapo City Engr. Bong Garcia.
The marker says “the rehabilitation of Marikit Park, a gift to the people of Olongapo City by the City Government of Olongapo. Made Possible through the generous support of SM Groups of Companies headed by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sy, Sr. as principal sponsor.”
Garcia said the rehabilitation of “Marikit Park” is part of SM Supermalls’ vision to continue joining communities, foster awareness and preserve signifi cant landmarks that serve as inspiration and remembrance of its great history.
Cerezo, in behalf of the city extended their appreciation to SM Olongapo for its continued commitment in providing services to the community and addressing the needs of the Olongapo constituents.
“The rehabilitation of the “Marikit Park” is indeed commendable. Our appreciation for this essential part of Olongapo existence and the children’s happy memories on this park as a place center and setting of family bonding, cultural performances and community events,”Cerezo said.
“In the unveiling of the park’s marker, we continue the symbiotic partnership between the city and SM Olongapo in line with our common goal of providing Olongapenos better opportunities,” Cerezo added. Engineer Mateo said SM shall undertake the full rehabilitation and restoration of the park’s amphitheatre stage, manhole covers, tiles, benches, plant boxes, playground equipment, lamp posts, signages and public restrooms.
“The maintenance and safety of Marikit Park” will be SM’s long term commitment to ensure the convenience of park visitors. We will have monthly allocations for manpower, maintenance and landscape program,” Mateo added.
