CABANATUAN CITY — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) destroyed some P100,000 worth of Christmas lights confiscated from various stores in Nueva Ecija on Monday.

Brigida Pili, provincial director of the DTI in Nueva Ecija, said the destruction was part of an effort to promote consumer safety, particularly from fire that usually results from defective Christmas lights.

Besides the yuletide bulbs, Pili said they also destroyed in public at the business district of Barangay Supermarket several defective weighing scales.

“We champion business but we also protect consumers,” said Pili during the Kapihan sa DTI that was held right after the destruction proceedings.

The erring businesses, she said, were initially fined P5,000. “But this (fine) will increase with corresponding imprisonment once they are caught again,” she stressed.

The Christmas lights, she said, were confiscated owing to either lack of appropriate permit from the government or for being defective.

Meanwhile, DTI also warned against false promotion by unscrupulous businessmen, including those operating in malls. These schemes, she noted, include offer of huge prizes.

“The clue is simple, if it’s too good to be true, don’t just bite” said another DTI official.
