Senator Bong Revilla said he was overwhelmed with the crowd na dumalo sa premiere ng kanyang Metro Manila filmfest entry, Ang Panday, sa The Block, SM North EDSA. Quite a number of them were fellow celebrities who  are obviously curious to know why the film is being talked about at pini-predict na magiging top grosser sa darating na MMFF.

“I’m glad,” ani Sen. Bong. “Hindi ako napahiya sa kanila. After the premiere showing, they congratulated me. They agreed na world-class ang Ang Panday. Kaya, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this will hit the international market so that from hereon, maging malawak na ang magiging market ng ating local movies.”

Co-produced by his family’s own film outfit, Imus Productions, in cooperation with GMA Films, the movie is Sen. Bong’s second time na gumanap bilang Ang Panday.

Ang first one ay may titulong Dugo ng Panday. Both films were based on the legendary komiks hero which National Artist, otherwise known as Komiks King, Carlo J. Caparas created.

“Ninong Ronnie (referring to the late Philippine Movie King Fernando Poe Jr.) who, to date, remains my idol, originally played the role. In fact,” tukoy pa ni Sen. Bong, “kung mga limang movies based on the movie ay nagawa ni Ninong Ronnie. They were all MMFF entries and all five  emerged as top-grosser.

“I am dedicating this movie to Ninong Ronnie as well as to Direk Carlo, who served as my mentor when he directed me in a number of movies noong baguhan pa ako, among which were Dugong Buhay and Sa Dibdib ng Sierra Madre.”

Ang Panday is jointly directed by Mac Alejandre and Rico Gutierrez and co-stars Iza Calzado, Rhian Ramos, Geoff Eigemann, Buboy Villar and Phillip Salvador.

By the way, natatawa si Phillip, who is appearing for the first time in a kontrabida role in Ang Panday for the love of Sen. Bong, tuwing naalaala raw niyang kusa niyang iminungkahi sa kaibigan na magpakalbo siya for the movie.

“To be different from all the actors who have played Lizardo, the greatest foe ni Flavio the Panday, sabi pa ni Phillip.

“All the while, naisip ko rin na ako lang ang kalbo sa pelikula.”

“My God, natawa ako when I discovered na kalbo rin nga, at sa tunay na buhay, ha, sina Benjie Paras at King Gutierrez, who are also in Ang Panday.”

Will he maintain his pagiging kalbo? Tanong kay Phillip.

“Hindi, ah,” ang kanyang maliksing sagot. “In fact, I’m having my hair grow na.” How would he assess his performance in the movie? “Sa totoo lang, more than satisfied ako,” he replied. “Ang sama-sama talaga ng image which I projected sa screen. I hope the audience will not forget that I’m just performing a role.”
