SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — Stakeholders and residents in the Subic Bay Freeport area joined the worldwide observance of Earth Hour on Saturday in a bid to promote social awareness on the need to protect planet Earth against climate change.
SBMA administrator Armand Arreza, who pledged the support of all departments of the agency in this endeavor, underscored the need to help protect the environment.
“The natural environment forms the basis of our economic wealth. So this is really a worthwhile event, whereby we can contribute our small share in arresting the deterioration of the environment,” Arreza said.
The local celebration, held at the beach front area of The Lighthouse Marina, is sponsored by Contemporary Arts Philippines, the British Embassy Manila, and Greenery Resources.
The Earth Hour 2010 global event is organized by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and being held annually from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on the last Saturday of March.
Residences and businesses in the Subic Freeport turned off their lights and other electrical appliances for one hour.
“We really need to raise awareness; we really need to take action,” Arreza added.
A forum on best practices for sustainable environment hosted by the British Embassy and Greenery Resources at the Admiral Hall of the resort was also held.
The forum was followed by a beach clean-up at the Boardwalk Park area; an “art hour” highlighted by the unveiling of environment-oriented paintings, light boxes, sculptures and installations; and finally, the Earth Hour and beach party.
The event was organized by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), in cooperation with the Lighthouse Marina Resort Hotel, a popular resort establishment in this free port.
