CLARK FREEPORT — “For 2019, ang naisaayos po nating pondo ay almost P1.4 billion. Aabot po siguro tayong P1.8 billion kung ipapalabas po ang ibang kailangan natin sa distrito kagaya ng mga school buildings.”

Thus, said Pampanga 1st District Rep. Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin of his top accomplishment for the year at the the Talk Widus forum of the Pampanga Press Club Wednesday at the Widus Hotel and Casino here.

Among the most pivotal of the projects lined up, Lazatin said, is road widening and bridge construction connecting barangays Pulung Maragul and Pulung Cacutud to decongest “horrendous” vehicular traffic in the eastern section of Angeles City.

“It’s a P70-million project na two-lanes na hinihingi po natin ng expansion para maging four lanes sa 2020,” Lazatin said.

The first term congressman highlighted the need for close coordination between the congressional office and the local government unit for the “successful implementation” of infrastructure development projects, especially roads and bridges.

He noted that the usually problematic right-of-way issues attendant to these projects are “well within the responsibilities of the LGUs.”

It was a subtle way of pointing to the need for his brother and namesake Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. to win the Angeles City mayoralty race, and synergize with him as district representative.

Lazatin noted the necessity for LGUs and the congressman to work hand in hand for the sake of their constituencies.

He lamented that when he offered the city government funding assistance for the Ospital ning Angeles (ONA), he was rebuffed. “I just want to help, but they refused,” he rued.

Ironically, ONA is officially named Rafael Lazatin Memorial Medical Center, the congressman’s own grandfather.

In the field of education, Lazatin reported supporting some 5,000 scholars throughout the district.

He has also taken as pet project the construction of more school buildings in coordination with the lead agencies Department of Public Works and Highways and the Department of Education.

Winning

Asked how he stood in the current campaign, Lazatin said he was 90 percent confident of winning against former Rep. Joseller “Yeng” Guiao whom he trounced in the 2016 elections.

This, notwithstanding Guiao having been reportedly endorsed by the Iglesia ni Cristo.

“Kasi po, tingin ko marami naman pong naniniwala sa nagawa po natin sa distrito. So, masaya naman po ang distrito sa nakikita ko ngayon at nabuhayan ang buong sinasakupan ng distrito mapa Mabalacat, mapa Magalang at Angeles City,” Lazatin said.
