MABALACAT, Pampanga – The municipal government has supported calls to ban the entry of heavy trucks along major roads here as one step to improve the traffic condition.

Disclosing this to Punto, municipal administrator Rosan Paquia said they had submitted a proposed ordinance to the town council urging them to ban the entry of trucks in MacArthur Highway and in roads near the downtown area.

But Paquia said they will leave the decision to members of the town council led by Vice Mayor Pros Lagman.

“We will follow their recommendation. But we reiterate our support to the ban on trucks and to find alternative routes for them,” said Paquia.

Paquia made this comment after residents blamed the trucks for the heavy traffic congestion at the downtown area since the installation of the new traffics lights in Barangay San Francisco here.

Residents said Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales should not let the trucks pass along MacArthur highway as they cause inconvenience to motorists.

“The trucks are so big and they don’t follow traffic rules most of the time. Worse, they fill up the small roads in the downtown area, “ said Mabalacat public market stall owner Ben Salazar. He added that trucks loaded with sand should pass through Concepcion, Tarlac and Magalang, Pampanga after exiting at the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) exit in Barangay Sta. Ines.

Salazar expressed doubt over the municipal government’s proposed ordinance supporting calls to ban the entry of trucks here.

“If the mayor really wants to ban the trucks he can do so. He is the boss. Besides, majority of the members of the town council are his allies,” said Salazar.
