ANGELES CITY – Run and help build 25,000 classrooms.

“The Pampanga Freedom Run on Feb 27 is a ‘run with a cause’ that aims to generate funds for the construction of quality school buildings nationwide,” said Manny So, head of the Angeles City Volunteers for P-Noy.

Simultaneous with seven other places in the country (Edsa, Cebu, Davao, Cagayan De Oro, Zamboanga, Bicol and Ilocos), the Pampanga run will be held at the Parade Grounds in Clarkfield, Pampanga at exactly 5:30 a.m.

So said the event, with a theme “A people powered run to build classrooms”, is part the 25th Edsa People Power anniversary commemoration.

The group is targeting more than 1,000 runners here in Pampanga for the event. They also partnered with the Clark Road Runners headed by Vince Tanglao.

“I am also urging the private sector to join the bandwagon and help us raise funds to build more classrooms,” So said.

“We often say that the school is our second home and yet our classrooms are like jail cells,” he lamented.

Out of the 25,000 classrooms, So said that initially, at least three to four school buildings will be constructed in Pampanga.

Showing a blueprint of the school building, the group said the classrooms are like modern-type houses with a library conducive for learning.

“It’s not the typical classroom we see in public schools. We will build quality school buildings with a budget of only P700,000 [per building],” So said.

All funds raised will be given to the Cory Aquino Foundation which will handle all disbursements for the construction of school buildings, he added.

The Foundation now has funds for building at least 100 classrooms aside from the 25,000.

So also said that the foundation have sought the help of the Department of Education in identifying school beneficiaries. “After construction, all school buildings will then be turned over to the DepEd.”

Louie Reyes, head of the Green Youth Brigade and a member of the Volunteers for P-Noy, said registration fee is P300 for the 2.5 km (for kids) and 5 km run. Those who will run for the 10 km will have to pay P350.

He said all participants will receive tshirts and other giveaways like rubber bracelets or balls. “Winners will also receive cash prizes.”

“Some children walk 7 kilometers daily just to get to school. You can run 10 kilometers so they don’t have to,” says a line from an audio-video presentation showed by Reyes to journalists earlier.

Tickets are available at Orchids Bookstore in Angeles City and City of San Fernando.
