NAMPICUAN, Nueva Ecija (PIA) — A total of 34 members of the Cabawangan Corn Farmers Association in Nampicuan, Nueva Ecija were trained in producing fermented corn cob as an alternative livestock feed during a hands-on workshop conducted by the Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) Central Luzon.

The initiative sought to strengthen the farmers’ knowledge and skills in producing low-cost and sustainable animal feed, which is expected to support organic feed production and provide additional livelihood opportunities for the association.

DA-SAAD Marketing Assistance and Enterprise Development Lead Rogie Castañeda led the session and emphasized the importance of proper nutrition in improving livestock production and health.

He also highlighted the use of alternative feed materials to help reduce production costs among farmers.

Participants were guided through the step-by-step process of producing fermented corn cob, which converts corn cobs into usable feed for poultry, goats, and cattle while minimizing farm waste.

Of the 34 participants, 13 were men and 21 were women. Thirteen were senior citizens.

DA-SAAD Central Luzon continues to conduct capacity-building initiatives to enhance farmers’ knowledge and skills, improve productivity, create additional income sources, and support the development of the agriculture sector.

This forms part of the national government’s continuing efforts, under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., to expand assistance and livelihood opportunities for Filipino farmers. (CLJD/MAECR, PIA Region 3-Nueva Ecija)
