This, amid reports that the permanent employees of the city hall have yet to receive their November 16-30 salaries as well as their December 1-15 payrolls. Again, what a shame! And what a pity. The people of Angeles have expected much from Nepomuceno and the new kind of governance he promised during the last elections. Now the city government employees are shouldering the consequences of alleged over-spending by the incumbent administration.
Mandatory obligations like the permanent workers’ salaries are being sacrificed in expense of luxury cars, guns and other purchases of the administration that is reportedly spending more than what the city government can cover.
And thus, the Office of Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting is investigating. Let us admit it. It is the name of the game. In our current political system, there is always a check and balance between the executive and legislative branches of our government. And there is check and balance among political foes too.
Within a year, Mayor Blue seems to have taken the trend from the provincial government where Gov. Eddie Panlilio and his loyal aide and ally, Atty. Vivian Dabu commit one blunder after the other. But in the case of Nepomuceno, the situation is even more alarming as his “most loyal” allies become involved in more serious accusations. Remember the JOJO group allegedly soliciting “Bar Taxes” in Fields Avenue. Huh! Capitalizing on sex workers. This is a crime bigger than tolerating alleged prostitution in the city.
And now, one of the mayor’s closest allies, the councilor who was given a moniker of “Mr. Token” has allegedly increased his assets by 300 percent in just a year due to his alleged suspicious transactions with dealers, suppliers and contractors from left to right.
On a lighter note, however, the city administrator, Bong Alvaro gave an interview over DWRW and was heard promising that the employees’ salaries will be given last week. But until Friday last week, many were still in doubt whether this would happen or not. Besides, the city administration is only giving their November salaries. How about their December pay? And how about the P10,000 GMA bonus?
AGENDA, the Angeles City workers’ union, should be up in arms already but they choose to be silent. In fairness, they were reportedly negotiating with the administration and trying to resolve this problem with diplomacy. What a gentleman’s act on their part. I don’t really know whether to praise them for such generosity towards the Nepomuceno administration or to throw a big laugh on their cowardice. This is the best time to show to the workers what the union stands for. This is the best time to express their concern to all the city employees and yet they choose to be very cool about it. Being cool is cool. But in extreme cases like this, being cool is foolishness or just plain cowardice.
