ABUCAY, Bataan- The Sto. Domingo Church in Abucay is the oldest church in Bataan and one of the oldest in the country, the spiritual ministration of which was entrusted to the Dominicans in 1588.

The church is one of the places of worship visited by many from other provinces in their “Visita Iglesia” during the Holy Week.

Monsignor Hernando Guanzon said the church is more than 400 years old and was the scene of fierce fighting between the invading Dutch and the natives with Pampango defenders on June 23, 1647.

Records showed that about 200 Pampangos died while 40 others together with the Spanish alcalde and two Dominicans were taken prisoners. The church was badly damaged by an earthquake on September 16, 1852.

Renovations and repairs were made but the sturdy thick walls and columns made of adobe or “batong silyar” have remained.  Some more than 400-year old floor tiles were also preserved outside of the church interior..

An image of Sto. Domingo de Guzman, patron saint of the Dominicans and Abucay town stands near the altar. Like all other churches under the Dominicans in Bataan,  the Abucay Church faces the Manila Bay.
