CLARK FREEPORT – Movie actor Dereck Ramsey’s bid to grab the championship for the Philippine Boracay Dragon team in this year’s international frisbee competition failed as his team was overwhelmed here last Sunday by defending champion Black Flag composed mostly of Americans.

Paul Regencia, president of competition host Philippine Ultimate Association (PUA), said the games ended with 15-5 score “with the Black Flag beating the Boracay Dragons in an intense two-hour game.”

Ramsey, who is recognized as the country’s top frisbee sportsman expressed disappointment over his team’s defeat, recalled to Punto that last year, Black Flag also elbowed out his 25-member team in a one-point losing margin.

Before the finals Sunday afternoon at the parade grounds here, he expressed confidence that his team, which also represented Swatch, would grab this year’s championship.

Renowned beauty expert Dr. Vicky Belo was seen in the audience cheering for the Philippine team. Ramsey is one of Belo’s models.

Dino Javier, director of the international Frisbee games known as “Perya sa Manila 2010”, said that both the Boracay Dragon and Black Flag were among the four finalists in the three-day competitions participated in by 32 teams. The other two finalists were Freak Show of Singapore and Shiok, also of Singapore.

“Frisbee has already risen to the level of professional sports and is being recognized as such by a growing number of countries,” he said.

Some of the teams also represented various provinces in the Philippines. PUA has been holding the the Frisbee competitions since 2003.

Javier said that Ramsey’s group has been regarded as the country’s best.
