CLARK FREEPORT – Cabinet Sec. Edgardo “Ed” Pamintuan and Jaycees members in Angeles City initiated on Sunday night a telethon, raising some P1-million cash pledges and goods for the victims of typhoon “Ondoy” in Metro Manila.

Pamintuan, a former two-term city mayor, and the Angeles City Culiat Jaycees Inc. (ACCJI) led a live three-hour telethon aired over ACCTN Cable Channel 3 hosted by veteran journalist Sonny Lopez.

The program was dubbed “Sagip Metro Manila and Pampanga, Tulong Angeleño.” It initially raised some P350,000 in pledges in less than an hour after the program started at 9:00 p.m.

“It’s pay back time,” said Mabalacat Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales who pledged P40,000 as his personal donation.

He was referring to the assistance given by Metro Manila residents and Local Government Units (LGUs) to the province during the height of destruction wrought by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991.

Morales said he would also ask top companies in his town and Clark to raise “approximately P.5 million” for the project.

Some of them are Trust International Paper Corp. (TIPCO), Jenra Grocery, Hausland housing developers and Fontana Estate and Casino.

Pamintuan handed over a check worth P25,000 to the ACCJI led by its chapter president, Avelaine Nepomuceno, as his personal donation.

Pamintuan said he would raise P50,000 from the three offices he handles – Subic Clark Alliance for Development Council, Office of External Affairs and Northrail project.

“No politics here. We should be one in helping our distressed neighbors,” said Pamintuan.

Nepomuceno said her group will accept donations of cash and goods for the fund-raising project which was also held yesterday at the Spencer’s Restaurant in Angeles.

She added that the three Caltex gas stations branches in Angeles –  Sto. Rosario, Cutcut and Marisol – would accept goods.

Cash donations, on the other hand, could be deposited to the ACCJI Metrobank-Balibago account at 007-374-511404, she said.

Atty. Angelo “Pinggoy” Lopez and his uncle, Tau Gamma Phi National Premier Guy Lopez, also joined the telethon. They rallied their friends and frat members to help victims of floods spawned by the storm.

Dan Concepcion of the US-based Alpha Cargo also vowed to donate clothes and P50,000. He graced the telethon after being advised by his relative, Clark airport official Alex Cauguiran who gave P10,000 to the project.

Caugurian disclosed that the Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) through its president and CEO, Victor Jose Luciano, would give P100,000 for the project.

Delfin Lee, developers of housing and business projects in Pampanga, will give P100,000 as his donation.

Others who came at the telethon include Councilmen’s League of Angeles City (CLAC) President Harry Castro and their members Alex Cacap, Darwin Punzalan, Precy Carpio, Baby Romero, Idy Pamintuan and Cocoy Deocarza.

Pamintuan said that “with the rate things are going, we could raise more than a million pesos of donations until Wednesday.”

Some of those who pledged to donate cash are Association of Barangays Councils (ABC) President Robin Nepomuceno and his son, Atty. Bryan, Bong Alvaro, Jojo Flores, Barangay Captains Jon Sladky, Jerome Costales and Phil Casupanan, Dr. Tantingco, owners of American and Century hotels in Angeles, Airlink Travel, Rene Magat, Lerma Ayson, Anjanette Viray and Precy David, Holy Angel University Batch Quirubin, Chuck Gueco and BDO branch in Angeles.
