SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — In celebration of Sea Turtle Day, George, a male Olive Ridley sea turtle under the care of Ocean Adventure Rescue and Rehabilitation Center (OARRC), was released Tuesday at Camayan Beach Resort here.

Camayan Beach Resort and Hotel hosted a short program to support OARRC mission “to enlighten, entertain, and empower communities to care for animals and to conserve and protect nature.”

After the program, officials headed by Olongapo City environment and natural resources officer Atty. Marife Castillo, Ocean Adventure, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority and OARRC veterinarians released George in the wild.

George was still a juvenile sea turtle weighing 2kgs. when he was reportedly found at Golden Park Beach on January 8, 2009 while Rodrigo Poblete and his family were swimming. George was then kept in a kiddie pool with tap water for two months.

Sea turtles live in salt water, and when he developed abrasions on his carapace, the family realized he needs professional help, so they brought him to Ocean Adventure in 2010.

Since then, the aquarists of Ocean Adventure have provided top quality care to ensure his well-being and now he is healthy to re-enter the marine world safely.

During his rehabilitation, aquarists fed him a variety of food from leafy vegetables to shrimps and their natural food, small fishes.

Veterinarians did a monthly physical examination to ensure his health. And after several months of close monitoring, he was moved to large natural lagoon where other sea turtle reside.

After the Sea Turtle Day program, guests were treated to a sea world presentation and facility tour of the center, zoo and aquarium.
