FARMER LEADERS from all 35 barangays of the City of San Fernando joined the first ‘Planting Festival’ held today in Brgy. Del Carmen.

This was organized by the Local Government, through its City Agriculture and Veterinary Office, as part of the Farmers’ week celebration in line with the Pyestang Fernandino 2018.

City Agriculturist Cristina Sangumay said the activity highlights the demonstration on the use of mechanized rice transplanter, an agricultural machine used for transplanting seedlings to the field, thus encourage local farmers to switch to modern farming techniques.

“Gusto natin ipakita sa mga magsasaka na hindi na conventional ang pagtatanim ngayon dahil mas episyente ang paggamit ng transplanter. Sa pamamagitan nito ay napapabilis ang pagtatanim at nababawasan ang production cost ng sa gayon ay maragdagan ang kanilang kita,” she added.

Jun Jacinto, member of the Sanduguan Farmers’ Association, led the demonstration of transplanting 18 kilos of hybrid rice seeds which were provided by CAVO.

CAVO technicians furthered that compared to traditional farming which requires manpower, only two farmers are needed to operate the transplanter wherein they can finish transplanting in a 1-hectare land for half day.

As for the labor cost, the use of mechanized rice transplanter helps farmers to save up to 70% compared to the total cost in conventional farming.

For his part, Mayor Edwin “EdSa” Santiago thanked the farmers who attended the festival and stressed their contributions in strengthening the city’s food security and economy.
