ANGELES CITY – Crafting the traditional Parul Angeleño continues to be preserved and promoted through the series of learning sessions dubbed “Art-Making: Authentic Angeles Parol” with the support of Mayor Carmelo “Jon” Lazatin II through the Angeles City Tourism Office headed by Louie Lazatin.
Students of the School of Living Traditions not only learn the techniques and processes of making the lantern but get an immersion in the history, culture and traditions attendant to the Parul Angeleño.
The designs used in learning sessions are from Tang Renato Calma of Cutcut, a recipient of the Talasinup Ning Singsing Award in recognition of his contribution to the preservation and promotion of Kapampangan artistry and cultural heritage.
Cultural master Tang Lucio Sison shared with the participants his knowledge and skills in the art of making the Parul Angeleño.
Currently undergoing at the Angeles City Library, the fifth learning session will culminate with a grand launch on Sept. 12, featuring the finished lanterns and the ceremonial introduction of three more learning phases of School of Living Traditions – Kulitan and Calligraphy, Sisig, and Dance.
