SAMAL, Bataan — Teachers at a public elementary school here cancelled their afternoon classes Friday and the “trick or treat” event as a celebration for Halloween upon being informed that Bataan was placed under Signal No. 1.

The children from daycare to Grade 6 of the Samal South Elementary School in Barangay Sta. Lucia were already prepared and in different costumes for the Halloween parade at 1 in the afternoon but were told instead to go home. The parents with the dismayed school children were advised to be ready for the Halloween party on November 4.

Gov. Jose Enrique Garcia III has released an information that Bataan was placed under Storm Signal No. 1 because of tropical storm Paeng. Quoting the weather bureau, the governor said that the typhoon has strong winds of 75 – 90 kilometers per hour.

“Pinapayuhan ang lahat na maging alerto sa posibilidad ng pagkabuwal ng mga puno gayon din sa banta ng mga pinsala sa mga imprastrakturang gawa sa magaan na materyales,” Garcia said.

He said that the province’s emergency operations center is ready while different agencies of government are on the alert.

Meanwhile, the local government unit of Samal was able to hold Friday morning a Halloween party, turning different department offices into ghostly sceneries with some employees dressed in various eerie attires.

Mayor Alexander Acuzar in Iron Man costume made the rounds of the offices and municipal compound accompanied by his guest, Hermosa town Mayor Jopet Inton who was dressed as an airplane pilot. Inton in real life is a pilot.

Vice Mayor Ronnie Ortiguerra and members of the sangguniang bayan in Halloween attires joined the two mayors in giving gifts to the children also in different costumes.
