MABALACAT, Pampanga – “The biggest open dumpsite in Pam-panga is in Mabalacat.”

Thus revealed the Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement (PGKM) after discovering an open dumpsite in the lahar wastelands of Barangay Tabun here. The dumpsite is about 30 meters away from the Bamban River in nearby Tarlac province.

Sonny Dobles, chair of the PGKM environmental desk, said they had seen “enormous” dumping of waste when they visited the site last week. The group added that several scavengers had been collecting what could still be recycled or resold from the wastes at the dumpsite.

The PGKM came up with the statement that Tabun dumpsite was the biggest after making an ocular inspection of dumpsites in the 20 towns and two cities in the province. They presented their report to the Sangunniang Panglalawigan last Tuesday.

Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales, in a statement, denied having an open dumpsite in Tabun. But he asked Tabun Barangay Captain Ador Pascual to investigate the dumpsite and give him a detailed report.

Morales said they have a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Tabun where wastes are segregated before being brought to Kalangitan Landfill in Capas, Tarlac.

Municipal Administrator Rosan Paquia said they have a “transfer point and MRF” facility in Tabun but not a dumpsite.

Dobles said they had seen a loader toss “fresh” garbage to an area near the river, and then burned.

Scavengers have reportedly told the PGKM group that wastes from Angeles City had been thrown at the Tabun dumpsite.

Paquia said they will investigate the alleged dumping of waste coming from Angeles.
