CITY OF SAN FERNANDO– The celebration of Nutrition Month in Central Luzon this July seeks to curb the prevalence of overweightness and obesity in the region as the National Nutrition Council (NNC) has lined up a series of activities with this aim.

Carrying the theme “Timbang Iwasto sa Tamang Nutrisyon at Ehersisyo,” the celebration began on July 6 with a thanksgiving Mass followed by a Zumba dance exercise.

Angelita Pasos, NNC Central Luzon nutrition officer, said a forum is slated on July 28 to highlight the importance of proper nutrition and physical activity.

“The forum aims to encourage communities, national government agencies, local government units, and other stakeholders to support and promote nutrition-related activities in order to effectively curb the prevalence of overweightness and obesity in the region,” Pasos explained.

The NNC-CL is also encouraging people in the region to embark on physical activities and exercise as well as proper diet to stay healthy.

Other activities are Nutri Quiz for Barangay Nutrition Scholars and a “thematic production number” by the Central Luzon Media Group.

The NNC will also visit elementary and secondary schools in Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, and Zambales to hold a contest on “Awit at Sayaw Para sa Wastong Nutrisyon.”

The celebration ends with the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony on July 31.

The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) said July of each year is designated National Nutrition Month by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 491 which came into effect in 1974.
