While the Philippines’ traditional sachet economy has long created complex waste challenges, this also presents a powerful opportunity for meaningful, systemic change where sustainability goes beyond individual consumer habits. This opens the door for proactive corporate leadership to revolutionize supply chains and turn everyday waste into innovative, circular solutions.
Taking a step further toward this brand accountability, Nestlé Philippines and Puregold joined forces in integrating circular initiatives into their operations through a collaborative system. This is part of Nestle’s efforts in its roadmap to net zero, and reflects a shared vision with the major supermarket chain to support sustainability in shopping experience.
Through this project, Nestlé gives used plastic sachets a new use in point-of-sale materials made of used plastic sachets in Puregold retail aisle displays. Particularly, Nestlé is now using pallet wraps incorporating upcycled sachets for its back to school display shelves in Puregold stores. It is also transitioning from the use of original wood material into D-boards (corrugated boards) that are lighter in weight and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified.

By taking responsibility for their packaging’s lifecycle, the two companies demonstrate how industry leaders can redefine corporate responsibility through consumer engagement and active collaboration, ultimately inspiring more brands to adopt their own green initiatives.
“Collaboration has always been central to our sustainability efforts, and we are glad that through this pilot project, we can bring our retail partners with us on the journey of Choosing Good. We hope this encourages more consumers to support and participate in programs that help care for the environment,” said Nestlé Philippines SVP and Head of Corporate Affairs Jose Uy III.
In total, the project successfully converted 3.3 million sachets into 525 units of pallet wraps and 244 units of Merchandise Display Units (MDU). Among these numbers, Puregold received an initial deployment of 52 units of pallet wraps and 57 units of MDUs for their Back To School campaign powered by Nestlé.
The project also allowed Nestlé to consolidate its delivery routes for display materials, cutting trip frequency and fuel use against the original deployment plan and reducing the emissions footprint of our distribution.
“As retailers, we look at ourselves as the bridge connecting brands that trust us to the consumers we serve. This gives us a role to play in advocating for waste management. We are proud to join hands with Nestlé in this as we support their circular economy goals and make more informed choices more accessible for everyone starting right in our aisles,” said Ivy Zharisse Piedad – Senior Marketing Manager at Puregold Price Club Inc.
In 2021, Nestlé Philippines declared its own local commitments in line with the global net zero initiative, dedicating its efforts to transforming operations, sourcing responsibly, and contributing to a waste-free future by aiming to collect and responsibly divert the equivalent volume of plastic it puts into the market from its packaging. The company has also leveraged several strategic partnerships and programs with the government and industry stakeholders to support business growth with community and environmental well-being.
“It is encouraging to see the steps we have taken our Net Zero journey. As we continue to embed sustainability in our everyday operations, we remain hopeful that collective efforts like this will help support progress toward less waste and create lasting, positive change for generations to come,” Uy added.
