MABALACAT –“It did more harm than good to the worsening traffic condition in the town.”

Thus said residents and motorists as they assailed the newly-installed traffic lights along McArthur Highway here, claiming that the traffic problem in this first class municipality now worsens.

“I and several other regular commuters understand if the traffic is tight during rush hours. But with the new traffic lights, the traffic is terrible at any time of the day,” said Roberto Flores Jr. of Barangay San Joaquin here.

He added that the traffic “had been at its worst” in the downtown at the boundaries of Barangays Sta. Ines and San Francisco and Poblacion due the new traffic lights.

“It’s wrong in every sense of the word. The duration allotted for each interval is not right causing inconvenience,” said tricycle driver Benny Santos in the dialect.

“The time allotted for the ones plying the main road along McArthur is too short which should not be the case,’ he added. The traffic lights play host to McArthur Highway and the Sta. Ines-Magalang road, which leads to the Mabalacat Gate of the Clark Freeport.

In an interview, Councilor Froy Galang said he will bring up the complaints of the people against the new traffic lights to Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales.

Galang, who resides just near the area where the traffic lights are, said “I am quite sure the mayor will do something immediately to solve the mess.”

Galang said he will urge Morales to tap traffic personnel instead of traffic lights “especially during rush hours.”

“The lights have no capacity to determine if one route needs more time to move. They are machines and they work without thinking and using their common sense, so to speak,” he added.

Galang also said they should also put off the traffic lights at wee hours of the morning because “it doesn’t serve it purpose.”

Since Monday, Morales could not be reached over his cellphones for comments.
