ANGELES CITY – The Smart Pampanga Buddies are back in  familiar territory as they try to hurdle anew the quarterfinals of the 2nd Liga Pilipinas (LP) regional basketball league.

Buddies team manager Gil Cortez said they are facing a must-win situation today against the Laguna Trace Stallions in Game 4 of their best-of-five series at the Holy Angel University (HAU) gym here. Game time is set at 4:00 p.m.

The Buddies, down 2-1 in the series, will rely on new recruit, lanky forward-center Don Camaso and their old reliable players such as Emmerson Oreta to force a deciding Game 5 in the same venue on March 28. Last year, the Buddies lost their quarterfinals series against Batangas.

“We lost by a hairline in two of the three games in Laguna. We failed to execute properly in the end game. We are prepared to do the adjustments,” said Cortez. He disclosed that in Games 1 and 3 of the series the final scores were 64-62 and 84-83, respectively. In Game 2, the Buddies won, 78-71.

“They are strong in the middle,” said Cortez of the Stallions as they acquired the services of center Sam Ekwe, who led the San Beda College varsity team to multiple titles.

“Our advantage is in the wing and will capitalize on that,” added Cortez.

Owned by Manny Pangilinan, the Buddies hired the services of former University of Sto. Tomas coach Aric Del Rosario to call shots from the bench at the start of the LP maiden season. But early in the second conference, Allan Gregorio took over as head coach.
