CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – “I no longer feel safe if I am abroad.”

Thus said yesterday Jason Aguilar of Barangay Panducot, Calumpit who was detained in Qatar for seven days after being mistaken as murder suspect Jason Aguilar Ivler who was seriously wounded in a shoot out with police in Quezon City on Sunday.

In a press conference here with Nacionalista Party (NP) senatorial candidate Susan “Toots” Ople, Aguilar said “as much as possible I don’t want to work abroad anymore.”

“The first time I worked abroad was a nightmare,” he said.

“I have many offers to work again overseas but I would want to stay and work in our country especially if could get a good salary,” said the 26-year-old overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who is the breadwinner in the family.

Ople, also of Bulacan and daughter of the late former Senator Blas Ople, had assisted Aguilar since the latter was deported back in the country last January 7. Ople said the government should make the necessary measures to avoid illegal arrests involving OFWs such as the case of Aguilar.

“If presidential candidate Senator Manny Villar and I make it, we would ensure a better service to the OFWs,” said Ople, who has assisted OFWs through the Blas Ople Center which she heads.

Aguilar, for his part, said the government should treat “everyone fair.”

“My friends tried to help me at the embassy in Qatar but they were not entertained there. Is this because I am just poor and mere OFW?” he said.

Ople said she had asked the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and other government agencies to clear Aguilar and certify that he is not involved in any crime or illegal activities.
