Nelson Guinto of Barangay Santa Lucia in Samal said he saw hailstones as big as grains of corn dropping with the rains.
“The hailstones lasted for only less than a minute but the rains continued,” he said.
“Pagbagsak ng yelo sa kalsada, ilang segundo lang lusaw na. Ang tunog naman sa bubong parang may naghagis ng mga buhangin o maliliit na bato lamang,” he added.
Guinto said that before the rains, it was dark and there was slight wind but loud thunder and lightning.
In the afternoon of last July 24, hailstones as large as playing marbles also fell in barangays Sapa and Santa Lucia in Samal town.
High school students Dan Roman Kyle Anonuevo, 12, and Amalia Mae Galicia, 13, were at the Jose Rizal institute in Barangay Parang-Parang, Orani when the hailstones fell between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.
“Sing-laki ng holen ang mga yelo at tumatalbog sa bubong na inabot ng sampung minuto,” the two students said.
Renidad Casenas, 71, said hailstones as big as marbles also dropped in Barangay Masantol in Orani, for about five minutes.
