SCIENCE CITY OF MUÑOZ (PIA) — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) encourages Local Government Units (LGUs) to adopt small-scale composting to reduce biodegradable waste.

The initiative supports President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration in strengthening environmental protection through science, technology, and innovation, while promoting sustainable communities and responsible waste management.

Engr. Johnemma Belonio, a Science Research Assistant at DOST-ITDI, stated that the dual drum composter and the household tumbling composter aim to assist the community in reducing and processing biodegradable waste into compost.

“Through technologies like dual drum and household composters, a large portion of waste can be processed instead of being dumped into sanitary landfills,” Belonio added.

The Dual Drum Composter was made for barangays and municipalities with a capacity of 100 kilograms of biodegradable waste per batch.

Meanwhile, the Household Tumbling Composter provides a family with a simple, manually operated technology.

Belonio explained that successful composting requires the proper balance of green waste, brown waste, air, water, and moisture that naturally breaks down organic materials.

She added that DOST-ITDI provides training and guidance to ensure the proper operations of the technologies.

Interested parties may also seek assistance through the respective Provincial Science and Technology Offices, which coordinate technology transfer with the institute.

The compost generated from these technologies can serve as a soil conditioner or organic fertilizer, improving soil health and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.

By encouraging composting at both household and community levels, DOST-ITDI supports Republic Act No. 9003, known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, by promoting waste segregation. (CLJD/CNG, PIA Region 3-Nueva Ecija)
