CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — As Pres. Duterte delivered his 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA) last Monday, hundreds of fisherfolk from Central Luzon and the Southern Tagalog Region expressed “anger over Pres. Duterte’s treachery against the country and the people” and pushed for his impeachment.

The Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) said the fisherfolk from the two regions joined other rallyists at the SONA venue and brought “streamers and creative placards with calls to impeach President Duterte.”

They also had a replica of wrecked fishing boat “to symbolize the devastated lives and livelihood of the Filipino fisherfolk in the West Philippine Sea caused by China’s continuing aggression with impunity.”

Pamalakaya chair Fernando Hicap said in a statement his group would be “leading the call for some members of Congress in the filing of an impeachment against Duterte after the SONA on the basis of graft, betrayal of public trust, and culpable violation of the constitution.”

“Filipino fishers are the front-line casualties of this long-running sea conflict and have been enduring the Chinese- perpetrated violence and intimidation on regular basis,” Hicap said.

Hicap, a former Anakpawis Partylist congressman, has urged his former colleagues as well as the newly-elected legislators in the 18th Congress to “support the impeachment complaint as it would be for the good of the country and sovereignty.”

“We have high hopes that this would be Mr. Duterte’s 4th and final state of the nation. The fishers are sick and tired of his pack of lies and rhetoric to cover-up his incompetence and criminal neglect,” Hicap also said.
