CABANATUAN CITY — The Diocese of Cabanatuan called on Philippine legislators to give more consideration, discernment on the divorce bill that was approved by the House committee on population and family relations early this month.

In an elaborate pastoral letter entitled “Ang pinagsama ng Diyos ay huwag paghiwalayin ng tao” read in weekend Masses, Bishop Sofronio Bancud also urged church-based priests organizations to be of guidance to newlyweds and every Christian couple.

The bishop explained the pastoral letter, Number 3, Series of 2020, was a product of various consultations with lay leaders who have vast experience in family life.

He expressed concern over reports that the bill is set for plenary deliberation after the committee nod

“Nakakabagabag ang balitang ito para sa atin sapagkat ito’y labag hindi lamang sa ating pananampalatayang Kristiyano kundi pati na rin sa ating mga pinahahalagahan bilang mga Pilipino,” the bishop said even as he stressed that both the Church and the state with the existing Family Code have an established process of annulment of marriage.

Divorce, according to the bishop,  pushes couples to alienate their most important vow, the children carry the burden, and divorce destroys family which is the basic foundation of society.
