Teenaged girl drowns in Bataan river

DINALUPIHAN, Bataan — Police reported the retrieval Tuesday of the body of a 13-year-old girl who drowned while swimming Monday at a swollen river in a barangay here.

Town police chief Lt. Colonel Emelito M. Dela Cruz said joint teams from the Philippine Coast Guard and members of search and rescue units from Balanga City and Dinalupihan in Bataan and Olongapo City found the body of Janica Jane Borbor, of Barangay San Simon, at the deep portion of the San Simon River.

Dela Cruz said victim was with her brother and friends swimming when she got drowned at the deepest part of the river. Her companions tried to save her but were overwhelmed by the strong water current.

Members of the Dinalupihan police, Bureau of Fire Protection, and the municipal disaster risk reduction management office who mounted rescue operations on Monday failed due to the turbulent waters.
