ANGELES CITY — “With President Arroyo assuming the lead role in the anti-drug campaign, she has rallied all concerned officials and civic leaders into combating drug trafficking.”
Thus said Balibago Barangay Captain Rodelio “Tony” Mamac as he joined leaders in both government and private sector in welcoming President Gloria Macapagal Aroyo as self-appointed drug czar.
Mamac said Arroyo had put pressure on law enforcement authorities, including the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Dangerous Drugs Board in a sustained, no-nonsense, and vigorous crack down on illegal drugs.
Mamac is the village chief of Region III’s recognized rest and recreation area and is a well-known campaigner against illegal drugs in Pampanga.
“Now Mrs. Arroyo has also engaged local government officials including the barangay councils to device their own mechanism designed to combat illegal drugs on their level, “ added Mamac. He recently figured in the successful raid of two illegal drug manufacturers in this city resulting to the arrest of a Chinese gang under an international syndicate.
“With the onset of economic hardship due to the financial crisis worldwide, expect a fresh and more daring resurgence of illegal drug trafficking in the country,” said Mamac.
Mamac said the traditional methods to fight this trafficking will have to be drastically revised and reinvented to ensure effective crackdown on street sales, and dismantle syndicated operations including the smuggling and manufacture of illegal drugs.
Mamac, a Gold Cross awardee and retired police major, said he had no objection to the proposed appointment of retired General Jovito Palparan to the Dangerous Drug Board or PDEA.
“He has a fearsome reputation which is a tremendous deterrent to traffickers,” Mamac said.
He said “the reactivation of Palparan, this time against a national security menace which is illegal drugs trafficking is a serious signal from the President as drug czar that she means business.”
