BALANGA City- PTT Philippines Corp. held an environmental summit last week to address climate change that experts claimed was worsening and needed the concern of everybody including the youth.
“Malala na kalagayan ng planeta, lumalalang lalo at nag-a-accelerate ang epekto ng climate change,” climate change commissioner Nadereb “Yeb” Sano said when asked on the real score of environmental protection and climate change.
He said that super typhoons, rainfall patterns and drought are affected by climate change. “Dapat alagaan ang kagubatan, dapat bigyan ng pansin ang problema at alagaan ang natitirang natural resources upang hindi magpatuloy ang kakulangan ng pagkain at pagkasira ng buhay at ari-arian,” Sano said.
He asked the youth to become part of the solution to remedy what he termed as hardships encountered by nature.
“Through this environmental summit, we are hoping that it will bring impact to the youth to save the planet,” the commissioner said. From a scale of 1-10 on the worsening climate change and environmental degradation, he placed the current situation at 8. “Marami nang irreversible, maraming natural resources ang naubos na,” Sano said.
But he still believes that that there is still hope as long as the people will unite in saving and protecting the environment. “Narito nga tayo upang hikayatin lalo na ang kabataan na maging bahagi ng solusyon,” he said.
“We want to bring environmental awareness to students and the people of Bataan through this environmental summit,” said Wisarn Chawalitanon, chief executive offi cer and president of PTT Phils. Corp.
He said that this awareness has to be passed on from generation to generations. The Thai executive said they have committed to plant 30,000 fruit-bearing and forest trees at the Bataan National Park in Morong under their Gas Up for a Tree project.
They have so far planted 10,000 trees during the first phase of the project and would be planting another10,000 fruit trees on Saturday.
