MARIVELES, Bataan – Fire of still unknown cause gutted down a commercial building fronting the Roman Expressway in barangay Cabcaben, Mariveles Wednesday night that left P1.2 million in damages.
Fire Officer 2 Salvador Bernabe, Mariveles arson investigator of the Bureau of Fire Protection, said the fire started at 10:45 in the evening and placed under control by 11:55 p.m.
Two firetrucks from Mariveles and one each from Limay, Bataan and barangay Lamao, also in Limay, responded and prevented the blaze from spreading in the residential and commercial area of Cabcaben, the investigator said.
He said that investigations are still ongoing to ascertain the real cause of the fire.
Oscar Trada, a carpenter of a furniture store, said the fire was so strong that they could not do anything but quickly got out of the building. “Wala kaming naisalbang gamit maging mga damit na naiwan. Ito lamang suot ko ngayon ang hindi nasubog,” he said.
The furniture store was one of the five stalls of the 13-year old Milagros Delostrinos Building which were all burned. Other occupants were an ice cream parlor, a mini-grocery, carinderia/sari-sari store and one that served as a sleeping quarter.
The stall holders like the carpenter said they were not able to save anything but only the clothes they wore. The occupants tried to dig from the charcoal and the ashes for whatever object they could still use.
