CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga (PIA) — The National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) reminded Central Luzon consumers of the importance of meat safety and proper inspection when buying and preparing meat products.

This is to ensure the quality of meat and avoid foodborne illnesses that may be caused by contamination.

NMIS Regional Technical Operations Center (RTOC) 3 Supervising Meat Control Officer Isagani Julius Rodrigo advised consumers to be vigilant when buying meat and purchase only from accredited sellers and establishments.

“When buying meat, they should look for the official inspection seal, either from the NMIS or their local meat inspector, since this will assure them that the meat has been checked for any disease or contamination and is safe to eat,” he said.

The consumers must also thoroughly inspect the appearance of the meat to ensure that it is safe and free from unusual odor and discoloration.

He also warned the public to be cautious when purchasing from vendors who are selling their products far from the market where the meat section is since their products may not be properly inspected or may be contaminated.

Meanwhile, the NMIS reminded meat vendors and slaughterhouses to strictly follow sanitary practices such as proper handling, storage, and transportation to prevent contamination and ensure the safety of meat products.

“For those selling imported frozen meats, we always advise vendors to keep the cartons because these contain proof that the meat they sell was inspected and came from approved sources. If they cannot show the certificate of meat inspection, we seize them,” he said.

The public is urged to report any violation of meat inspection and safety to NMIS RTOC 3 hotline number 0933-826-3760. (CLJD/MJSC, PIA Region 3-Pampanga)
