ANGELES CITY – Sec. Edgardo “EdPam” Pamintuan has announced that a United States Navyman has donated used clothes “as a way of showing our appreciation and thanks for all the support that Angeles City and the community have given us.”
Jeff Cogswell, a US Navyman under Commander Fleet Air, Western Pacific located in Atsugi, Japan, said they frequently use the airfield at Clark and “we are given outstanding support each and every time we fly here.”
“We came up with the idea to do a clothing drive in November. Around Christmas time a lot of people on base start to go through items they do not want anymore to make room for the new things they will be getting during the holidays,” Cogswell said in a letter emailed to SCADC media relations Director Archie Reyes.
“We thought this would be a great opportunity to collect those items and do something meaningful with them instead of letting them get thrown out in the trash,” he added. “That is when we came up with the idea to bring those items to the Philippines,” Cogswell said.
In a text message, Reyes told Punto Central Luzon that SCADC Chairman Pamintuan has initially distributed the used clothes to residents of Barangay Cuayan here.
He said some 500 beneficiaries of the goods from Japan via Philippine Air Force and SCADC are the Social Action Apostolate of the Holy Rosary parish of Bishop Pablo David and some remote communities here. Donations include used by high quality clothes, toys and educational materials.
Reyes said they are still waiting for more boxes of clothes from Cogswell and from their friends in the US.
“We knew the people here would truly appreciate the kind gesture and really take care of the items and be thankful for them. This was our way of saying thank you,” Cogswell said
He also thanked Mr. Van Dine and the Philippine Air Force “for helping us to make this happen and their continued support as well.”
For his part, Pamintuan said that they will be distributing the goods to various barangays here.
“We have to prioritize the basic needs of the people instead of building an untimely project like the sports complex,” he said.
