SAMAL, Bataan – A suspected vintage bomb used during World War II exploded at an abandoned lot within the residential area of Barangay Santa Lucia here early morning of Monday that brought fears to many residents.

No one was hurt. Residents said many children use the area as playground and connecting passage to another road.

Narciso Vicente said they heard loud explosion at about 7 a.m. “Napatakbo kami at nang puntahan namin ang pinagsabugan, nakita naming sabog-sabog ang pader at nakapulot kami ng kapirasong bakal na napakainit pa at umuusok,” he said.

He showed a fragment of the bomb.
Vicente lives some 30 meters from the explosion site. Debris of rocks was seen on rooftops more than 50 meters away.

“Nagising ako sa lakas ng pagsabog, nayanig ang bahay ko,” Glicerio Enriquez who resides some 60 meters away said.

Residents of Santa Lucia about 200 meters away said they heard the loud explosion. “Natakot kami,” they said
“Nagtakbuhan palayo ang mga tao,” Vicente said. He said that some children reportedly found the bomb some months ago in a nearby creek and they did not know where it was left. “Heto at dito pala iniwan at sumabog,” he said.

Insp. Gerald John Bautista, Samal deputy police chief, said the fragment seemed to come from a vintage bomb of World War II but that they will still refer it to the police bomb explosive unit to determine its real type.
