ANGELES CITY – “Go for it. You will be the first woman city mayor.”
Thus said Salapungan Village Chief Robert Yeen as he urged Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting to run for mayor in 2010 amid reports that she had been wooed to seek-reelection by a mayoralty aspirant.
Yeen said Vega “is not just winnable but a qualified public official.”
“The honorable vice mayor is graft-free despite being in public service for more many years. She is no doubt equipped with experience and intelligence,” added Yeen.
The two-term barangay captain said Vega had not succumbed to pressures of being with the minority in the city council.
“She has consistently opposed projects of the mayor not good for the city such as the planned sports complex,” he added.
Yeen, a history teacher, is being considered by the camp of Vega as one of their councilors for next year’s elections.
Yeen expressed gratitude to Vega for considering him as one their candidates. He urged the residents “to choose their leaders wisely as it may spell the difference in genuine public service.”
The others being considered in the line-up of Vega include: former Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) Presidents Efren De la Cruz and Jerry Alejandrino, Broadcast Journalist Arnel Panganiban, Funenaria Angelina owner Mai Cruz and Sta. Teresita Village Chief Lou Banola.
Vega’s allies in the council – Councilors Jay Sangil, Ruben Maniago, Maricel Morales and Willie Rivera- have expressed their intention to seek re-election under the party of the vice mayor.
But Vega disclosed earlier that she had narrowed down to Rivera or Morales her choice for vice mayor.
Former two-term Mayor and Subic Clark Alliance for Development Council (SCADC) Chairman Edgardo Pamintuan reportedly wants to make a comeback and challenge Mayor Francis “Blueboy” Nepomuceno. He is also eyeing Vega as his vice mayor.
But Pamintuan has yet to make any categorical statement if he will seek the top executive post in this city.
Balibago Barangay Captain Rodelio “Tony” Mamac was the first to announce that he wants to run for mayor next year. He is reportedly considering Claro M. Recto Barangay Captain Val Lagman and Rodel Abrea as his councilors.
Vega and his group, including Yeen, are known allies of First District Rep. Carmelo “Tarzan” Lazatin.
