JAEN, Nueva Ecija –– A village chairman and nine others were arrested in an illegal cockfight inside his own compound in Barangay Calabasa here Sunday.
Jaen police chief Major Baltazar Corpuz identified those sarrested as barangay chair Leovigildo Agapito, 62, married, of the said village; Zaldy Gomez, 30; Tomas de Belen, 57; Conrado Paynor ,71, all of Barangay Hilera; Raymond Abellon, 31, of Barangay Tambo Adorable, San Leonardo; Cesario Fermin, 55, and Cornelio Padilla, 56, both of Barangay Lawang Kupang, San Antonio town; Felipe Pacua, 45, of Barangay Berang, Santa Rosa; Onofre Cunan, 56, of Ulanin Pitak here and Oliver Yambot, 45, of Barangay Sto. Tomas South, also of this town.
Corpuz said the operation was hatched with the provincial police operatives upon confirming intelligence information about the illegal gambling activity, known locally as “bularit” in the area.
Recovered were six fighting cocks, three of which were dead.
Some 60 other persons managed to elude arrest by running to a nearby farm field, the police chief said, noting that cockfighting enthusiasts come from different municipalities surrounding this town.
Charges of violation of Republic Act 1602 (Illegal Gambling) were filed against the suspects who are now locked at the local police custodial facility.
