CLARK FREEPORT — The Medical City (TMC) – Clark recently opened its center for kidney health and transplantation as one of its flagship programs which focuses on chronic kidney diseases or end-stage renal diseases.

The center offers a complete and comprehensive clinical practice and advance technologies for accurate procedure and advance technological treatment that is appropriate and targeted for patients with kidney failures.

According to TMC nephrologist Dr. Edmundo Pasamba, patients with end-stage kidney diseases that were treated with kidney transplantation have a better quality of life and overall survival compared to patients who remained on hemodialysis.

TMC-Clark has a team of surgeons trained locally and internationally to perform kidney transplant surgeries. The surgeons are supported by a multidisciplinary team of nephrologists, nurses, nutritionists and radiologists among others.

Proper assessment and evaluation that are necessarily determined by the patient’s doctor is required prior to the operation.

According to Pasamba, kidney donation also requires extensive check-up as well as an ethics examination by the ethics committee to know if the donor and recipient will make a suitable match.

“Yung potential donor na yun i-examine din ng nephrologist to make sure na suitable din siyang mag-donate (The potential donor will also be examined by a nephrologist to make sure he/she is suitable to donate),” Pasamba said.

“And then after that, titignan kung gaano kamatch yung donor and recipient para mag proceed doon sa further step ng surgery. Then pag nagawa lahat yun doon mai-schedule yung mismong kidney transplant procedure (And then after that, we’ll see how the donor and the recipient will match before we proceed to the surgery. Then once everything is settled, we can already schedule the kidney transplant procedure),” he explained.

Essentially, the recipient’s relatives are usually the best match in donating kidneys for patients and emotional ties for non-relatives is also one of the factors to be considered, Pasamba said.

TMC also noted that donating a kidney does not have a negative impact on the donor in terms of health or ability to do his/her usual work.

According to Pasamba, in the case of deceased donors, these are the patients who gave consent to donate their organs when they die. If a patient does not have a suitable kidney donor, he/she can be entered in the kidney transplant deceased donor waiting list.

“Patients diagnosed with chronic kidney diseases as well as their families, should not lose hope. We will be at your side in making the best decision for your treatment and help you get back the health you lost with the disease,” Pasamba assured.

“In essence, kidney transplant is the best treatment for patients who have kidney failures,” he said.

TMC-Clark is one of the leading hospitals in Central Luzon with kidney transplant and organ donation programs that has service delivery unit guided by highly ethical and professional individuals equipped with tools and highly-skilled team of experts for procedure and treatment.

Patients may visit the center at TMC-Clark, Clark Global City for inquiries and know more about its kidney health and transplantation program.
