SAN JOSE, Tarlac – Workers rushed to finish the P240 million Tarlac Sports and Recreational Park (TSRP) for the staging of the annual Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association (CLRAA) on March 15-21 here.
In a press briefing on Saturday, Gov. Vic Yap said the opening of CLRAA will coincide with the inauguration of the facility perched on a hilly area of this town. San Jose is about 10-minute drive from the capital city of Tarlac.
“Tarlac is ready to host the event,” the governor said.
Yap disclosed that some 35 hectares of the “first-class” facility had been developed for various athletic events. The rest of the site, he added, will be used for motocross field, BMX bike rides, jogging, trekking, jogging, mountain climbing and picnics.
Yap also said he oversees the construction of the sports complex since October. “The grandstand at the track and field oval was my personal design.”
He said the facility was necessary to highlight the “good sites and people” of their province.
“We should get an impression that Tarlac is not just open space and mountains. There is more to it,” he said. “Good thing now it’s very accessible via the SCTEx,” Yap said.
Paniqui Mayor Miguel Rivilla, president of the Tarlac mayor’s league, shared the sentiments of the 43-year-old governor. He said the sports TSRP will “showcase” the province.
Rivilla, together with Department of Education (DepEd) District Supervisor Victoria Aguas and DepEd sports coordinator Cecille Reyes, joined Yap in the press conference attended by 40 journalists based in Central Luzon.
Yap said the complex is being built not only for sports activities but also as an eco-friendly recreation area.
The first-term governor added that the TSRP was conceived by his father, former three-term governor and now Second District Rep. Jose Yap, after the former Tarlac Athletic field was converted into a commercial area leaving the province with no sports facilities.
Yap said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had assisted the province in funding the multi-million facility as well as the DepEd, Philippine Gaming and Amusement Corp. (Pagcor) and local government units.
