CABANATUAN CITY – Supt. Joselito Villarosa, Jr., city police chief, distanced his office from the spate of summary execution in this city that spiked as in different parts of the country since the Duterte administration declared war against illegal drugs upon its assumption to office.

“Naniniwala po ako na mayroon tayong batas na dapat na sundin,” said Villarosa when asked about the supposed existence of an “anti-drugs hit squad” during the mass surrender of some 1,000 suspected drug pushers and users from the city’s 89 villages at the city disaster risk reduction and management office (CDRRMO) command center gym on Sunday.

He said the city police is conducting an in-depth investigation into the killings. It can be recalled that on July 6, three people were successively killed in this city, all along the busy national roads, during busy hours of the day.

On Saturday, two bodies were found dumped beside the service road of Emilio Vergara Highway in Barangay Sumcab Este this city, at around 5:54 a.m. The road diverts motorists from places south of this city to northern towns and provinces and vice versa.

Villarosa said he did not believe in vigilante style of killing.

“Naniniwala po ako na may batas tayo na dapat ipatupad hindi lamang po sa Cabanatuan City kundi sa lahat ng panig po ng bansa natin,” he said.

The city police chief meanwhile expressed belief that the thousand men and women of different ages that yielded to the police call through the help of village officials under Oplan TokHang chose the path of change.

Arnold, 30, one of the surrenderees, said he started using illegal drugs when his parents broke up a couple of years back. “Ayoko na pong mangyari pa sa ibang miyembro ng pamilya ko ang nangyari sa akin, gusto ko na talagang magbago,” he said.
