MABALACAT, Pampanga – Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales scored a landslide victory in the first automated elections as he garnered more votes compared to the total score of his three rivals.
But despite Morales’ big win, he remained “humble and forgiving” as he wore a pink-colored shirt when he was proclaimed on Tuesday afternoon by Commission on Elections (Comelec) officer Maria Rosario Lalic.
Nacionalista Party (NP) mayor bet Marjorie Morales-Sambo, daughter of Morales, used pink as her symbol and motif of her failed campaign to unseat her own father. Sambo placed second and garnered 18,459 votes.
“This is love,” said Morales when asked by Punto why wears a pink polo shirt. The Lakas-CMD-Kampi standard-bearer got 35,080 votes, or 52 percent of the total votes cast.
The mayoralty race in this town got much attention as a father was pitted against his own daughter. Adding more controversy to it is that Morales blamed his son-in-law John Sambo for asking her own daughter to run against him.
“The people have spoken and it’s time to move on and work for the benefit of Mabalacat,” said Morales, who was accompanied by his wife Nina Manipon in the proclamation rites at the town council office.
He refused to comment further about his daughter who was a former Sangunniang Kabataan (SK) president here.
“Marjorie is always welcome to come back,” said broadcast journalist Deng Pangilinan, who was the spokesperson of Morales who exchanged heated words with John, a veterinarian, during the campaign trail.
Liberal Party (LP) mayoralty candidate Dr. Victor Tiglao was third in the race and got 11,038 votes. Businessman Joseph Policarpio had 2,492 votes.
Independent vice mayor candidate Councilor Noelito “Noel” Castro also scored a landslide win against Vice Mayor Prospero “Pros” Lagman, ending the former’s winning streak in politics.
The winning councilors according to rank are: Cherry Manalo, Christian Halili, Liza Pineda, Oscar Aurelio, Benny Jocson, Jerry Basilio, Froilan Galang and Rox Pena.
Marcos “Jun” Castro, one of the three councilors of Sambo, placed 9th as Pena led by 185 votes against the former.
