SAN MARCELINO, Zambales –The local government here launched the “SAGIP Program – Segregation and Rewards for Change Incentives” of the municipal environment and natural resources office on Aug. 19 in Barangays Rizal and San Guillermo.

An initiative of Mayor Elvis Ragadio Soria, SAGIP is a plastic waste diversion program whereby residents can exchange segregated plastic waste for rice and grocery items.

Every kilo of plastic has equivalent points and can be exchanged for a kilo of rice or instant noodles. The public can also exchange coffee, cooking oil, soy sauce, vinegar, soap, laundry powder, and other grocery items.

The program aims to encourage each barangay and citizen to properly separate plastic waste, provide incentives and prizes to enthusiastic followers of waste segregation, and intensify the campaign against piles of garbage for a cleaner and safer San Marcelino. Photos: San Marcelino PIO
