PORAC, Pampanga – “ I am still thinking about it.”

Thus quickly reacted businessman Mike Tapang who had been asked to run for vice mayor anew in the 2010 elections.

In an interview, Tapang disclosed that he and Vice Mayor Jing Capil recently met and discussed the possible tandem. Capil earlier announced his bid for mayor, while Tapang had expressed his intention to run for town councilor.

“I was invited by Jing Capil to run as his vice mayor next year,” said Tapang, president of the Porac Quarry Association (PQA). Capil defeated Tapang in the 2007 vice mayoralty race.

“Capil and I had been good friends. It was just unfortunate we had to slug it out in a political arena which is part of democracy,” said Tapang.

Supporters of Tapang said his candidacy for vice mayor would deal a ‘big blow’ to the re-election bid of Mayor Roger Santos.

At least four aspiring and incumbent councilors will transfer to the camp of Capil should Tapang accept the invitation, they said.

“It’s quite true. They will transfer to Capil-Tapang tandem because I was the one who brought them to Santos’ party,” said Tapang in confirming the statement of his supporters. He declined to name them because their respective candidacy and relationship with Santos might be affected.

Tapang also disclosed that Santos had repeatedly asked him to run for councilor under the mayor’s ticket. Tapang’s original plan was to run for councilor as an independent.

“Santos has not filled his line-up for councilors up to this date. He reserved one slot for me,” Tapang said.

Former Vice Mayor Rey Lapid is the running mate of Santos. Councilor Dexter David, on the other hand, is in tandem former Vice Mayor Carling De La Cruz, a loser to Santos in 2007.
