CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — “Jerome Yap had brought honor not only to fellow Fernandinos but to the entire Filipino people.”
Thus said Councilor Alex F. Patio as he filed yesterday a resolution before the city council urging the conferment of a posthumous award to Yap, the United Nations worker killed in the earthquake in Haiti last week.
Patio immediately filed the proposed resolution hoping to have it approved by the body before the awarding ceremonies of the Outstanding Fernandino Award slated next month.
Patio said the award would be “more significant” to the Yap family if it will be conferred during the awarding ceremonies of The Outstanding Fernandino Award in February.
“Yap showed that Filipinos are always ready to serve their fellowmen, especially in poor areas. Such selfless service is worth emulating and should be given due recognition,” Patio said. Patio and Councilor Redentor Halili co-sponsored the resolution.
Patio disclosed that Mayor Oscar Rodriguez has given his “all-out support” to their proposed resolution.
Yap, an executive assistant to the deputy head of the United Nations Mission in Haiti , is the son of former provincial board member and prominent pediatrician Dr. Leticia Yap.
Yap died when the United Nations headquarters in Haiti collapsed during a strong earthquake that also killed thousands in the Caribbean nation. His body was found late Monday in the ruins of the Christopher Hotel, which had housed the UN headquarters in Haiti.
