CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Oil spill containment equipment have been deployed by the Philippine Coast Guard in the wake of the discovery of 25 liters of used oil affecting 500 square meters of coastal waters at Sitio Naswe, Barangay Ipag, Mariveles, Bataan, on Nov. 5.

The PCG received a report of a suspected oil spill at around 9:30 a.m., prompting its immediate response.

“Initial findings identified the substance as having originated from washing activities. The source of the oil remains subject to further verification,” the PCG said in a statement.

In coordination with the Bataan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the PCG mobilized seven absorbent booms and 2,200 absorbent pads to support the cleanup operations.

By 6 p.m. of the same day, the response team including personnel of the municipal agriculture office of Mariveles, and Barangay Ipag, had collected 800 kilograms of oil-contaminated debris and used absorbent materials, placed in 40 sacks for temporary storage at a secure location.

Cleanup operations are scheduled to resume today, Nov. 6, as the PCG continues to assess the affected coastal area and coordinate with local authorities to minimize the environmental impact of the incident. PCG-Bataan/Punto News Team
