LIMAY, Bataan – A fire that lasted for about three hours in the evening of Saturday during a lull in the fury of typhoon Ondoy burned down a residential building in Barangay Townsite, here with an estimated damages of P3 million.

Senior Fire Officer Aaron Avilla, chief of Limay Fire Station, estimated the damage at P1.5 million but Edna Savillano, owner of the house, placed the damage at P2.8 to P3 million.

The Bureau of Fire said a short circuit of electrical wiring inside the ceiling caused the fire that started at 7:45 p.m. just after heavy rains temporarily stopped.

SFO1 Francisco Cortez, Limay fire investigator, said the fire was placed under control at 10:25 p.m. but was contained by firefighters at around 10:45 p.m.

The fire reached second alarm but firetrucks from Balanga City, Department of National Defense Arsenal in Lamao, Limay and from the towns of Abucay, Pilar, Limay and Orion have immediately responded.

Savillano said she was frightened to see the fire engulfing the whole house.

“My first instinct was to safety my two young grandchildren All our clothes and appliances, except a refrigerator and a washing machine in the dirty kitchen, were turned into ashes,” she said.

Only the dirty kitchen was spared but the whole concrete building with three rooms, big sala, kitchen, dining room, comfort room were all set ablaze.  Relatives dug for jewelries, kitchen utensils, cameras, computers and other appliances but these were all totally burned.

She added that even some cash money intended for the payment of medical expenses of another grandchild confined in a Balanga hospital were burned.

Fire officials said no one was hurt in the incident.
