CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – In order to instil the value of good nutrition to Filipinos, the National Nutrition Council
(NNC) has launched an advocacy campaign that is meant to disseminate “Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF)” to reach a wider audience specifically the vulnerable sectors in the region.

Dubbed “NGF on Wheels,” around 100 tarpaulins were distributed to tricycle and pedicab drivers at the Regional Government Center in Barangay Maimpis here. “The distribution of 2×3 tarpaulins for tricycles and wheelers is among the best ways to impart to a wider audience the NGF messages as hundreds of commuters either ride or see these on a daily basis,” Nutrition Program Coordinator Rhodora Maestre said.

“Chosen drivers signed a contract with us to have the materials displayed… at the back of their tricycles or cabs for six months,” Maestre added. A similar NGF tarpaulin distribution was also done in Angeles City last January 17, she said, adding that the NNC will continue to distribute NGF tarps in Balanga City on January 21, Meycauayan City on January 28 and at the city hall on January 28.

In 2012, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology initiated the revision of the NGF to keep up with the changes in the nutrition situation in the country as well as new information on nutrition and related interventions to address nutrition and health problems.

The NNC Governing Board approved the revised NGF in October of the same year. The new NGF consists of
10 messages that include both food-based and behavior-driven guidelines, which address current nutritional and dietary concerns.

They are: eat variety of foods everyday to get the nutrients needed by the body; breastfeed infants exclusively from birth up to six months then give appropriate complementary foods while continuing breastfeeding for two years and beyond for optimum growth and development; eat more vegetables and fruits everyday to get the essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber for regulation of body processes; consume fish, lean meat, poultry egg, dried beans or nuts daily for growth and repair of body tissues; consume milk, milk products and other calcium-
rich foods such as small fish and shellfish everyday for healthy bones and teeth; consume safe foods and water
to prevent diarrhea and other food and water borne diseases; use iodized salt to prevent Iodine Deficiency Disorders; limit intake of salty, fried, fatty and sugar-rich foods to prevent cardiovascular diseases; attain normal body weight through proper diet and moderate physical activity to maintain good health and help prevent obesity; and be physically active, make healthy food choices, manage stress, avoid alcoholic beverages and do not smoke to help prevent lifestyle- related non-communicable diseases.
