DINALUPIHAN, Bataan- A four-year-old monkey playing drums and arnis de mano is a sight to behold at the Zoobic Safari in the Subic Freeport adjacent to Morong, Bataan.
The monkey from the Celebes ape species of Indonesia is known as “Jhonny d’drummer boy,” one of the many animals being trained by Lito Razon Reyes of Dinalupihan town.
The ape shook its head and with gusto played the drums with Reyes. It also played arnis de mano with the trainer while riding a donkey. “Kung may magaling tayong boksingero na si Manny Pacquiao, narito naman si Jhonny d’drummer boy na magaling sa arnis de mano,” the trainer said.
The monkey seemed to be like a dramatic actor, too. It pretended to be dead and placed beneath its two armpits the bamboo stick as if thrust into its body.
Reyes said he started training the monkey beginning last October and he has noticed more improvements in its performance. The monkey has no tail.
Reyes has been training many animals for the last 35 years. He has dogs that play basketball, jump the hurdles and dance. He has also trained a monkey that plays basketball, too and rides a bicycle and skates.
Can you imagine pigs singing and dancing the tinikling? Well, Reyes has them also.
A pot belly pig named Svinia that wowed many with her song has retired. But here comes another pig that not only sings but dances the tinikling as well.
On Wednesday, the one-year old pig, also of the pot belly species from Vietnam, showed its “talent” by dipping its feet in tinikling rhythm and in cadence stepped over two small bamboo sticks pounded on the floor by the trainer.
The pig also showed a sample of its “singing prowess” to the beat of trainer Reyes
The animal trainer calls his new “star” Djavosca that he said means woman or lady in Russian. Svinia on the other hand is the Russian word for pig. Reyes worked for many years in Russia and is married to a native girl from the said foreign country.
He said that he has just begun training the new pig and it will take four months of 25 -30 minutes daily to perfect its move.
“Kung minsan nalilimutan ko na pamilya ko dahil kahit nasa bahay ako iniisip ko kung ano pang training sa mga alaga kong hayop ang gagawin ko,” Reyes said laughing.
