MABALACAT CITY – Amid threats of severe El Nino, the Mabalacat City Water District (MCWD) participated recently in the international conference on water and waste technologies held by the International Water Association (IWA) in Hong Kong.

“The conference focused on water management of urban water systems and the practical applications of researches and modern technologies from water experts all over the globe,” said MCWD Director Diosdado Pangilinan.

MCWD Administrative Department Manager Bernadette Nuguid also attended the conference.

Pangilinan noted that during the IWA conference, water experts from US, Japan, China and other developed countries shared with participants the “challenges they face in the management of urban water systems.”

“Some dwelt on the actual application of the latest technology and methodology on how to maximize water re-use and enabling resource recovery based on their actual experiences,” he noted.

Pangilinan and Nuguid joined tours of water facilities “to observe the actual applications of these modern methodologies and new researches related to water and wastewater.” The tour included visit to the Seafront Salt Water Pumping Stations.

During the tour, SANI demonstration plant manager Guanghao Chen, a civil and environment engineering professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, personally demonstrated the so-called ‘Sulphate reduction, Autotrophic denitrification and Nitrification Integrated (SANI) Process’.

Pangilinan described the SANI process as “an energy-efficient and low carbon sewage treatment technology that uses sulphate in seawater as an oxidizer to eliminate pollutants.”

Hong Kong is the only city in the world that uses seawater on a citywide scale for flushing toilets, saving 740,000 cubic meter of freshwater daily.
