SAN ANTONIO, Nueva Ecija – Mayor Arvin Salonga of this town assailed alleged intervention of a legislator which resulted to “dangerous delay” in the construction of five flood-mitigation projects in four flood-prone villages here.

Salonga appealed to Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Sec. Mark Villar not to give in to the request of 4th District Rep. Magnolia Antonino-Nadres for modifi cation or realignment of slope protection dikes that include two in Barangay Sto. Cristo and one each in barangays Papaya, Luyos and Hulo.

The projects have a total cost of P155 million which were part of the P328-million package of infrastructure works for this town provided under the General Appropriations Act (GAA).

Salonga said the projects should have been bid out last May but was postponed because of Nadres’ request based on a letter sent to him by former district engineer Ulysses Llado of the Nueva Ecija 2 Engineering District.

Salonga said Nadres would want to transfer the projects to the municipalities of San Leonatdo, Jaen and San Isidro, all of the fourth district.

Llado was transferred to Bataan on June 19.

“Napakahalaga ng project na ito at dapat magawa bago dumating ang malalakas na bagyo,” Salonga said noting that this municipality was inundated during the onslaught of typhoons Lando and Nona.
