MABALACAT, Pampanga – Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales is set to award the Central Luzon police director and 11 others as honored sons and daughters of this town today as part of the month-long fiesta celebration.
Morales said Chief Supt. Leon Nilo De La Cruz, Region III police chief, “is a dedicated officer who makes us proud being a native of Barangay Sta. Ines, Mabalacat.”
Morales added that De La Cruz, a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) batch 1978, “is one of the reasons we are proud of the PNP.”
Two institutions – the Mabalacat Water District (MWD) and Rotary Club of Mabalacat – are also set to receive the honor at the open basketball court in Barangay Poblacion at 6:00 p.m.
“The Rotary club in our town has done so much for the community. The MWD, on the other hand, has reaped national awards for its quality service,” said Morales. He disclosed that the MWD headed by General Manager Atty. Francis Dimaliwat bagged for two consecutive years the Philippine Association Water Districts (PAWD) Top Water District performer (large category) and best newsletter.
The other awardees are: Leonor Morales-Hizon; Luz Morales; Leonor Reyes; Domingo Dublin; Gregorio Santos; Blanca Sarmiento; Teresita Macarro; Aida Cruz; and Pepito Torres Sr.
Morales said “most of the awardees are parents who have brought up responsible and professional children benefiting the community.” The others, he added, are “philanthropists.”
Diosdado Pangilinan, chairman of the Caragan Festival committee and co-chairman of fiesta committee, said a cultural and variety show will also be held during the awarding ceremony.
Meanwhile, all is set for the holding of the 2nd Caragan Festival here on February 27 culminating the month-long fiesta celebration.
Pangilinan said that at least 3,000 students from 32 schools in Mabalacat will join the street revelry. Mabalacat’s Caragan Festival is similar to Bacolod’s Maskarra and is being geared to promote the preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Aetas.
Caragan is the late chieftain of the Aeta community in Mabalacat then a forested hinterlands covered with Balacat trees. The former Aeta settlers had been forced to move in the mountains with the onset of modernization.
Pangilinan expected that this year’s celebration of the Caragan Festival “will surpass the magnitude of the previous one last year.” The festivity will start at 1:00 p.m. along McArthur highway from Barangay Mabiga to Poblacion.
